I've been working my through Bob Stanley's exhaustive study of pop music
'Yeah Yeah Yeah: The Story of Modern Pop' since Christmas and can
thoroughly recommend it. Taking us through the charts from the 1950's to
present day Stanley's encyclopaedic knowledge and deep love of the
subject really shines through each chapter. It's hard to read without
stopping to consult Spotify every other page and re-listen to familiar
music with fresh ears or discover something new - the text is littered
with references to obscure gems. It's clear to see how someone with such
a firm understanding of what makes a good pop song managed to write so
many great tracks himself for St. Etienne, one of the most consistently
brilliant yet underrated bands of all time.
