Harold and Maude

Hal Ashby's charming 1971 romantic comedy Harold and Maude sees the coming together of cinemas most unlikely couple. Harold is a death obsessed teenager who drives a hearse and tours funerals. Maude is a lively 79 year old holocaust survivor who lives every moment as if it might be her last.

Although it was a box office failure on it's release the film has grown a huge cult following in the forty years since and garnered massive critical acclaim. The films influence can be seen in the work of some of todays most leftfield auteurs; Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, Judd Apatow, Noah Baumbach, Richard Ayoade.. the list goes on.

It's credit to Ashbys direction and the life best performances of his leads Ruth Gordon and Bud Court that the characters and their relationship has such believability. We are introduced to Harold and his suicidal tendencies in a memorable opening scene that sets the tone to the darker end of the comedy spectrum but the mood lightens as the film progresses and Maude teaches Harold that life is the most precious gift of all and shows him how to live it to the full.

Another reason for the continued cult appeal of Harold and Maude are the still fresh sounding songs by Cat Stevens that grace the soundtrack. Stevens was suggested to Ashby by Elton John who, as well as originally being slated to supply the music, was actually offered the role of Harold but turned it down as he didn't want to slow down the momentum that was starting to build in his music career.

It's a beautiful and strange film that Ashby, who had already won an oscar for editing In The Heat of The Night in 1967, followed up with a string of classics; The Last Detail, Shampoo, Coming Home and Being There, making him one of the most consistent directors of the decade.
