Lotte Reiniger

Lotte Reiniger dedicated her life to crafting intricately animated films using the most basic of tools. She was a pioneer of silhouette animation whose 1926 film 'The Adventures of Prince Achmed' is regarded by many to be the first fully animated feature film, preceding Walt Disney's 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' by 10 years.

Reiniger's films have a timeless quality - the detail and emotion she managed to produce from such a simple technique was phenomenal. The way her characters come to life as if by magic reminds me of the work of Ray Harryhausen, another animator who spent his whole career perfecting a singular craft.
