Favourite Films of 2013

So as we kick off 2014 here's a quick roundup of the best films I saw last year, new & old.

As always I didn't get to the cinema nearly as much as I would have liked and there are loads of new releases I haven't yet seen. I'm hoping to catch some of these on DVD/ download this year; The Kings of Summer, Good Vibrations, No, Stoker, The Hunt, Computer Chess, The Great Beauty.

In no particular order (although Gravity was definitely my favourite) these are the five best new films I saw in 2013..

Gravity (Alfonso Cuaron)
A Field in England (Ben Wheatley)
Tabu (Miguel Gomez)
Beware of Mr Baker (Jay Bulger)
The Stone Roses: Made of Stone (Shane Meadows)

And in a year that saw many prominent feature directors turning their hand to the smaller screen I thoroughly enjoyed the TV series Top of The Lake and Southcliffe.

These are the five best old films I saw for the first time..

The Prestige (Christopher Nolan)
Angel Heart (Alan Parker)
Sunshine (Danny Boyle)
Paper Moon (Peter Bogdanovich)
Before Sunrise (Richard Linklater)
