Editing isn't always invisible.
The most famous edit of all time is without doubt the match cut in
Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey that cuts from a bone thrown
into the air by an ape in prehistoric times to a spaceship, propelling
the audience forward millions of years in a single frame - a transition
that represents the evolution of the human being.
There is brilliant scene in Goodbye Lenin where Alex's aspiring
filmmaker friend Denis shows him a wedding video he has edited in which
he's slowed down a shot of the bouquet being thrown and match cut it
with a shot of the wedding cake in homage to the 2001 cut. I can't think
of any other edits in the history of cinema that have been referenced
in this way.
